Roaches : American Cockroach

Approximate size

American Cockroach adults are about 1 3/8” to 2 1/8” long.


Reddish-brown, expect for pale brown to yellow band around edge of pronotal shield. A cockroach is oval in outline with a flattened body, long and threadlike antennae, a mostly hidden head. Both sexes are fully winged; wings in male extended beyond the tip of abdomen. Poor to moderate fliers.

Common places to find bug

The American cockroach is common in basements, foundations and walkways adjacent to buildings. There insects are not common inside homes, but during colder months, they may move inside a house for a warmer temperature. Can be found in moist or damp areas, such as crawl spaces. Often congregate around spilled or unsealed food. Roaches can be found in cracks or crevices in building.
